Game Review: Guild Wars

I really wanted to like this game…I played the beta a bit and some some potential…but, eh.

The ideas behind it seem very good – no pay per month, easy access to max-level pvp chars for newbies, pve content to unlock pvp stuff, free dual classing with the ability to change your secondary class pretty much at will (after a certain quest at level 20), etc. In reality what it wound up feeling like to me was very hum drum. Picture Diablo II but boring. Lots of running over the same territory fighting the same monsters – many of them ambushes – which get downright annoying.

I see the interest in being locked to 8 skills, forcing players to strategize and specialize for pvp – so if you want a pvp Diablo you *might* like this. Lots of people are playing, but I’m thinking a lot of that is because it is free (monthly).

Let me be clear here: to me, this game would NOT be worth paying money for every month. I have a feeling it would have sold only 1/3 to 1/4 the units if this were the case. I am not saying the game is a bad game in any way, just that it is completely average. For a free game that is fine, for a pay MMORPG that would/should be market death. That being said, it probably took me about 25-35 hours to get bored of it, which is about what gamers are led to expect is a “standard” gaming experience for many console games, so it is not necessarily a waste of an initial purchase.
