08/23/06 new comics commentary

A week late I know. I write this rather brief bit up, then promptly forgot about it.

Ultimates Annual 2: Ok, was there seriously something up with the pacing/plotting in this one? I found pieces of it rather hard to follow (where did the mention the guy who somehow got Zola out (??) and wtf happened to him???), maybe I’m missing some pages. On the other hand, it was very refreshing to see at least a mention of the current race issues in the US today. And it was more than a mention, it was an actual conversation! At least as far as a conversation can go in a mainstream comic.

Ultimate Spider-Man 99: Huh, wasn’t really expecting yet another person to learn his secret identity already – I guess they’re trying to catch up to the 616 Spidey in some ways. Wonder if Ultimate Civil War is next year! DOOOOOMM!!! But seriously, Bendis could write his way out of an adamantium bag. Man can that guy produce. 3 excellent titles a month (Powers, Ult. Spider-Man, New Avengers) – and maybe more I’m forgetting.

Secret Six 3: This volume’s storyline has gotten a little harder for me to follow, but not too hard. I love Gail Simone. She gave us Killer Princesses and the funniest Deadpool EVER. Birds of Prey I’m sorta meh on, but it’s not bad. Considering she’s like..the only (?) woman writing for the big 2. Hmm, I don’t know where I was going with that. But I love you Gail. Marry Bendis and make a BrainBaby. Please.

Wonder Woman 2: Still trying to grok the broad in the big panties. I like her in a team, but could never, ever get into her in a solo book. I haven’t seen DC’s version of Hercules before though (he shows up at the end), so I’ll check out next month as well. This whole Wonder Woman not being a super-hero anymore thing is cheese though, we all know it’s going to end, why drag it out, what’s the point?

Jack of Fables 2: Fables is brilliant, and this is no different. If you like Fables you’ll like this. If you don’t, we probably wouldn’t get along on a lot of other things either. Will be getting this in trades as well (in addition to Fables, which I actually wait for the trades to read. Crazy patient I know!).

Justice Leage of America 1: JLA was easier to type. Why oh why did they have to go back to spelling it all out! YARRRGH! I give that 2/4 stars. Oh wait, the issue itself? It was pretty good. I like the focus on random-ass (to me) Red Tornado. Go go reddy. A few of the character commentaries by the big 3 (S-B-W) were hard to follow though, but no real complaints. Looking forward to number 2.

Eternals 3: With this issue the Mr. Gaiman’s visit to Marvel continues to be an excellent one. That and we find out where the series is in continuity. Except for the Stark mentions the first two issues felt to me like Elseworlds/What If kinda deals. But I’m really enjoying everything so far, probably picking up the trade on this one.

Daredevil 88: Brubaker’s run continues to crawl screaming after Bendis’s awesome take. We’ll see if he ever catches up, but even if he don’t everything has been incredibly worthwhile so far. The prison arc will probably be remembered as one of the classic DD stories.

52 16: Eh, I think the whole thing will make for a good read (I’m liking all the Black Adam stuff), but it’s not worth actually picking up to me. I never liked Booster Gold either, so not really caring there. Besides, I doubt he’ll stay dead for long.

Ghost Rider 2: It’s not horrible, but nothing is grabbing me yet.
