How to sell us a car, step 2: sell a car that doesn’t suck

I’m going to be short here, and not even try to be subconsciously funny, because I’m tired and sunburned (the joys of being pale).  So today, we started out at VW, since Jen really liked the look of the Rabbit, and was pleased at least with the look of the Jetta.  They had some decent used stuff, and we wound up test driving a new rabbit (like 22-23k before taxes, etc.) and a used (06) Passat.  I hadn’t considered the Passat for us because the new sticker prices are in the next price bracket above ours.  But, anyway, this 06 had 41k miles on it, and was less than the new Golf (which seemed like a snappy little car, but was a little too “little” for me), so blah blah we wound up getting it.  We did briefly consider a Mazda5, because it’s this crazy looking mini-van in disguise thing that had a lot more room inside than it looked like outside.  Clown car?  Yes.

The “negotiating” sucked, and took like 2 hours, but, I think we got a pretty good deal.  I checked prices when we got home, and we got it for under standard value/retail whatever – and our cost was including an extra four year warranty we paid for as well as nasty-ass Washington sales tax (nasty because if we’d bought a car when we lived in Portland, we would have saved $1800 or so).

Here’s some shots.

It rides really smooth, has a moon roof, leather interior, a “5 body trunk” (I’m not sure if you have to hack the bodies up before hand or what – but it’s a really big trunk), AC vents in the back (very cool), cruise control, a weird ass computer thing thats always telling me which direction we’re facing, and other good odds and ends.  The cd-system (6 disc) doesn’t have an auxiliary input though (for mp3 players), so it’s got to go pretty soon.  We’ll see how soon we have extra money now that we’ve got a nice car payment in our bill stack.
