Obama & tech: 11-14-07 speech @ Google

I know, I’m always late on these things. But hey, I figured it was on my birthday, so it was worth posting.

He makes lots of good points about tech, and things in general. I can’t say I disagree with anything he said. Lots of people will be skeptical about the universal medical database, and the risks for data loss/theft/privacy/whatnot. But really, those problems all exist with the current system…issues can also be made about customer profiling. BUT, that would hopefully be offset by the difference in plan providers his plan would go with…if they expect normal insurance companies to play fair with something like that…but again, I don’t think that’s the case.

Oh, and I think…Denmark maybe already has a similar system. From the little feedback I’ve heard, it seems to work quite well.

Our entire society is going to move into the digital era – the choice is whether to do it with purpose, or be dragged kicking and screaming. Dragging is not good, because then we look stupid and backwards to the rest of the world. Now, others may not care about this, but I actually like the idea of America being a country people look to for inspiration and ideas.

The speech & q/a period is an hour long. Listened to it during baby feeding this morning :). There were only one or two points where he really “sounded like a politician to me”, and in both cases he got back to directly answering the question. Which is a shock if you’re used to standard politico-speak.
