whew, good thing they were white!
This cracks me up.
This is a passage (unfortunately without citation or evidence…what the hell??) from the book I’m reading VERY SLOWLY (a history of Ethiopia):
The West explained Ethiopia’s victory through sophistry. Since racism did not permit Westerners to acknowledge that black men could vanquish whites, Europeans suddenly discovered that Ethiopians were Caucasians darkened by exposure to the equatorial sun. Whereas previously Ethiopians shared sloth, ignorance, and degradation with their African brothers, they suddenly became energetic, enlightened, and progressive. The Orthodox church, often reviled by visiting white clerics as debased and corrupt, now was seen as a proper vehicle of the Holy Spirit and the true keeper of Ethiopia’s national spirit.
This after King Menilek thoroughly defeated an Italian army (in 1897?) that thought they could easily beat an army of “savages” 3x-5x their size.
