Book Review: The Dreaming Void
The Dreaming Void
By: Peter Hamilton
If anyone has spoken to me at length about sci-fi they’ve probably heard me rave about this author’s Night’s Dawn trilogy – my favorite space opera hands down, and also my favorite sci-fi written in the last 15 years or so. It’s fucking brilliant.
So, several novels down the road – does he hold up?
Yes.
The scope feels a little bigger (somehow – even though it’s probably about the same – man vs. the end of everyhing), and yet more personal and physical – so far – probably the lack of addressing the afterlife. There are some slow parts, but they are majestic slow parts, and so far always worth it.
This series is set in the same universe as Pandora’s Star and Judas Unchained…although you would actually be just fine without them I would highly recommend reading them first.
There are actually two separate books running though this one – a psychic medieval fantasy, and the other your standard space opera. It’s really interesting the way he weaves the two together – I won’t spoil the relation, but the potential future interplay is interesting.
I love the way his stories are bigger than “good guy vs. bad guy” eee
FOUR & 1/4 STARS OUT OF FIVE
It’s not higher because there are some slow parts, and I was actually able to put the book down and read it over the span of several months – that’s not entirely due to the slowness – I just didn’t have much time to read – but just the fact that it didn’t keep me locked in (like say the book I just read over the last 3 days), keeps it lower. Still, that being said, if you’re a hard sci-fi or space opera fan, I don’t think you’ll be let down.
