Wednesday lyrics: Romeo & Juliet
Romeo & Juliet
by Dire Straits
A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsusss serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?Juliet says hey it’s Romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack
He’s underneath the window she’s singing hey la my boyfriend’s back
You shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about itJuliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?Come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals? When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
Now you just says oh Romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with himJuliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I’ll love you till I die
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?I can’t do the talk like they talk on TV
And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you
I can’t do anything except be in love with youAnd all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie I’d do the stars with you any timeJuliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I’ll love you till I die
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsuss serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?
Evidently all their videos/songs have been aggressively pulled from youtube, so no video link. But if you CLICK HERE, then it should play from iLike.
Kind of cheesy I know, but this song still gets to me.
And no, I don’t know what “streetsuss” means, but those are the lyrics from Mark Knopfler’s official site.

Oh man. This is one of my favorite, favorite songs (says the woman who keeps claiming she likes loud rock n’ roll. I do, I really do!).
It brings me back to a particular relationship and a particular sweet sorrow, but I think I would love it, anyway.
I can’t do the talk like they talk on TV
And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can’t do everything but I’d do anything for you
I can’t do anything except be in love with you
Still gives me goosebumps and a lump in my throat. Every.time.
This is the spot that always gets me:
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I’ll love you till I die
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong Juliet?
The juxtaposition of youthful, boundless love and simple adult/callous/analytical “the time was wrong” gets me. That’s my story at least. Although sometimes my overly analytical side wonders at the mental health of someone that cried every time they had sex….
I’ve nothing to say other than I love this song. Good post :-).
I’ll take it!
Coming to the conversation way late, but I grew up listening to Dire Straits and this was my favorite angsty-love song. Of course, I had no idea what it all meant for several years, but it was one of the first I learned on the guitar. So… now you have a new follower. Because of this post. Thanks!
Hey thanks :). Also, you’ve got me beat on guitar, I never could play it right.
I didn’t really get “into” Dire Straits until college, maybe. I think I had one of the albums as a kid, and I remember their landmark video, but I don’t think I really appreciated them. Their albums are so solid – and I love a solid album. I’m not much of a classic rock fan – but certain bands I do still enjoy.
