current reading: The Radicalism of the American Revolution

The Radicalism of the American Revolution, by Gordon S. Wood.

Continuing my one-book-per-era tour of US history.  So far there are only 4 parts: colonization (done), revolution (in progress), slavery (next) and the civil war.  Eventually maybe I’ll add some more recent stuff… history is a tough read for me.  It’s always interesting, but it literally puts me to sleep.  Seriously, I’ll be falling asleep on my lunch break after 15 pages or so.

No idea what is up with that.

I do have another book on suburbanization that may count as a part 5, we’ll see when I get to it… maybe around June or so.

So far this one is pretty good, if not printed in a horrible tiny font – good one guys.  Really, way to make something sleep inducing even more sleep inducing.  But seriously, it’s spending a lot of time setting up how entrenched people of the time were in the concept of the monarchy, gentlemanhood and the lack of class awareness or desire for social mobility that we have today.  Basically, trying to make the reader understand why the Declaration of Independence with its “all men are created equal” clause was such a big fucking deal.  Which it seems to be doing nicely.

  1. You know how I love my TNC peeps. You know this. So you know that it is with great love that I say the following:

God damn you for putting another book on my list!

Why oh why are there only ever 24 hours in a day?

  2. Steve Jobs says:

Get a Kindle or one of those new iDorks. Then you can make the font for any book what you want it to be.

Someone brought an ipad in today. I think it’s too heavy/unwieldy for me to use an a full time e-reader. Web browsing & comic reading I could see BUT it’s still too expensive for what it does. (Although maybe not for what it *is*, right? I amuse myself!)

  3. [...] one I was reading…  it’s in the house somewhere.  IT HAS TO BE.  But where?  I mean, there are only so [...]
