American Slavery, American Freedom by. Edmund S. Morgan The first thing I notice about a history book is how fast it reads, and this one ready pretty fast – I’m guessing some of that is because an average of 1/4 of each page was filled by citations/annotations – most of which I could skip – [...]

I dreamed that Mr. & Mrs. Obama (and possibly their kids) came to visit our family as some kind of random sampling of the population or something, to interview them about their struggles in the current economy. [first time a president has ever been in a dream of mine that I can recall] So, we’re [...]

Bill and Kelda! Yeah I know, usually I could care less for relationships in comics, but I have a soft spot for this one.

Wow, what a good use for an entire planet of Kryptonians!!1101! Or 100,000 of them at least. And now they are mostly dead/phantom zoned, except for a few sleepers that I’m sure will turn up as random villains but WOW that was a totally interesting thing to do with a planet of super powered beings [...]

So, I’m in a plane for some reason. It’s not a passenger plane though, but rather a giant cargo liner of some sort – the area where I wake up looks like a giant ummm… gym converted into a triage unit? Triage unit because all the other “passengers” are on medical bed type deals with [...]

Mainspring by: Jay Lake I have to say, the opening chapter put me off. Especially the last page or so, I was like really? Really? Not only do the apprentice’s master’s sons hate him, but one happens to beat him up and steal the last of his father’s money on the way out of town? [...]

DC just killed the new (non-white) Atom (Ryan Choi) (in some random Titans one shot to show how badass Deathstroke and crew are). Thank gods we still have the old, white Atom to fall back on huh? Because killing of (newish) minority characters that actually headlined a series (even if it was canceled) is always [...]

Empire of Ivory by: Naomi Novik Another good read that I just tore through, but I’m starting to see a pattern… Maybe it’s just the (now somewhat) practiced writer in me – but her plot shapes are showing. I suspect this is probably how all books read, more or less – but – I’m really [...]

How crazy is it that this is The Hold Steady’s 5th album? Just another way for time to make me feel old I guess. I think some of the age may be showing on their part too… but more on that later. Nevermind, let’s just hit it now: the album is good, but I think [...]

Black Power War (Temeraire 3) by: Naomi Novik I have to admit, I wasn’t particularly excited going into this one. The whole Napoleon/history thing is just not a lure for me BUT I was pleasantly disabused of the notion of potential boredom. Especially the last third of the book… that just zipped on by. I [...]
