DS9+17: Babel
This was a pretty run of the mill stock episode, plot-wise.
Avery Brooks seems to have dialed back the crazy faces to “normal”, and the rest of the cast seems to have relaxed into their roles as well. The only thing I really noticed as awkward/odd in this episode was a scene with Kira & Dax walking to Quarks in which Kira is walking just a leeeeeeetle bit too seriously.
After the seriousness and drama of the central conflict (Oh no we have a plague everyone will be dead in 12 hours ahahahahahahahha10101010!!!) the resolution came about entirely too easily for me. I mean, Kira couldn’t even find the original maker of the virus – just some dude who “knew” of it, and somehow he was able to fix it in like 5 minutes? Based off the Bashir’s work… who was evidently almost to the cure but gave no indication of that in the moments right before the plague hit him? (Note: I did like the nice touch of showing what the computer screen looked like through Bashir’s infected vision). I was initially thinking the doctor Kira found would be the original creator, gone undercover with some plastic surgery or something. But no, it really was just some other random doctor that had known him for 6 months. Yeah. Not exactly a shining moment for the writers.
The guy who kept complaining and wanting to get on his ship was a really odd waste of time/red herring. I mean, I’m guessing he was supposed to be a red herring? His acting was really strange and the whole situation was just… odd. First his crew members were trapped on his ship, cut off from the plague, then somehow they were all on DS9 with the plague and he was on the ship and … what?
And the love-hate fest between Quark and Odo continues.
