Writing
I’m currently working on a few projects:
- The Case of the Shredded Souls
- series concept: Epic fantasy dressed up as the bastard lovechild of Men in Black and the Dresden Files with a touch of morphine.
- plot: …. I’ll post my a query letter at some point.
- progress: Book one [The Case of the Shredded Souls] completed at 85,000 words, preparing queries to send out.
- Time: I started working on it sometime around May of 2007 and finished a rough draft in May of 2009.
- as of mid April, queries are all sent out and fingers are crossed
- future: A potential 5-6 book series is heavily outlined, but I’m going to try and hold off on the writing unless someone actually wants to publish it – I’d rather not have all my shiny things in one hoard.
- information: I’ll post some cut scenes and excerpts eventually, maybe even my query letter and the first three chapters… just in case agents or editors happen to be actively hunting down clients. First I need to figure out how I want to lay it out and what I’m comfortable with.
- Seven Moons book 1
- concept: fast moving, semi-pulp, swords & sorcery.
- plot: An ass-kicking heroine and her badass magic sword. Except that she’s got amnesia and the sword is trapped in the shape of a man. And they’re on the run from an army of zombies.
- progress: rough draft of book one completed at 63,000 words.
- Time: This went much faster than M4H1, and only took me about 3 months, from 9/22/09->11/10/09. Yes, I do keep track of these things.
- Out to beta readers, one has finished it, waiting for another to start, and seeking a third.
- future: …evidently I lost my notes (!), but it lays the groundwork for what could be a mid-length series (5-6 books), a sequence of trilogies, or an ongoing, open-ended run of pulptastic goodness.
- information: I probably won’t post anything until I get to the query stage, or decide it’s not worth querying.
- The Case of the Rider’s Warning
- The sequel to The Case of the Shredded Souls.
- progress: Outlined and a few scenes written. I probably won’t start working on it seriously until either Shredded Souls is sold or, if that’s not the case, until I have a bunch of free time. I love the world and I love the long range story I have planned, but it seems like a waste if I’m trying to actually break into writing to write sequels to something that isn’t sold.
- “Mark’s Story”
- concept: something of a prequel to my Monsters for Hire universe stuff (The case of X), and a second chance to sell the universe if the first one falls through.
- plot: tells the story of one of the MCs from The Case of X up to right before they became an agent.
- progress: outlined and a dozen and change chapters written (~30k words). Moving slowly because it’s hard for me to get motivated these days. I’m learning lots about the M4H world in the writing process though, which is great.

I don’t quite think it’s fair that my getting to finish reading the series depends on whether other people recognize the obvious.
It’s all about time.
If it takes me a year to write a book, I kind of have to spread my chances at selling them around. If you want to read the other ones, all you need to do is sell one of your books, make some connections, then hook me up with an agent or editor ;).
